Das Zöphelsche Haus

At the crossroads "Graben- and Untere Kirchstraße" the Zoephelsche Haus, one of a few memories of the 18. century in Oelsnitz/ Vogtland, is situated.

The building, an old tenner yard with framework-upper floor, was constrcuted in the year 1755 and outlasted all fires thanks to the location in front of the town walls. The initiales GD in the Keystone over the door immortalize the builder of this house, Lohrot-tanner Gregorius Diezel (1720 to 1797), who immigrated from Elsterberg. In 1769 he was mentioned in the citizenship index as an inhabitant of the lower suburb for the first time. In 1863 the merchant and plumber Anto Zöphel (1830 to 1880) bought house and the ground. The family ran a shop for colonial goods, later, at the end of the 1950s, a petrol station with garage could be found there. From 1966 to 1991 the house was used to residential purposes. The framework was exposed in 1985. In 1995/96 a comprehensive restoration took place. In September 1996 the towm library moved in, three month later the culture and tourist information centre, which can still be found there today.

The Zoephelsche Haus is used for events of the library and for small exhibitions. Since November 2009 a memorial plaque in the yard has been commemorating  visitors of the teacher, hiker and publicist Paul Apitzsch (1873-1949) from Oelsnitz.
